WHY WORRY ABOUT TERMITES?
There’s a saying which goes “something you killed didn’t stay dead yet? You must have put some termites in your coffin” Commonly known as “WHITE ANTS” or “SILENT KILLERS” termites are one of the oldest farmers in the world. One of the most challenging tasks one could face while maintaining a household is to guard it from termites!
These insects exist in colonies and primarily thrive on wood and also consume cellulose-based plant materials. Unfortunately, all homes, regardless of their construction type, can provide cellulose food for termite infestation. Termites are detritivores, or detritus feeders. They feed on dead plants and trees which includes wood. A termite’s mouth is capable of tearing pieces of woody material. This ability is what causes concern in human dwellings .While termite workers only measure approximately 1 cm to a few millimeters in length, their feeding habits are capable of causing costly damage to property. House foundations, furniture, shelves and even books are all possible feeding sites for termites.
TYPE OF TERMITES PRONE IN INDIA
Although termites could be broadly classified as dry wood termites and sub-terranenan termites. The ones which are more prone in our country are the latter. They primarily originate from the ground, go in search of food and comfort themselves in shelter galleries in other structures. These sub-terranean termites cannot survive without establishing connection with the soils and require a lot of moisture for its survival which makes them more susceptible in wet areas in the building. Like fire and flood control, termite control is an essential ingredient for the household.
TYPE OF ANTI TERMITE TREATMENT
The Termite treatment is generally provided in two ways. PRE-CONSTRUCTION and POST CONSTRUCTION treatment. The former is applied during the construction of your investment and the latter is after the entire construction process.
They say “prevention is better than cure”. Rather the pre-construction methodology is more effective and economical than the post construction termite treatment. During the process of construction, major portions of our buildings remain exposed to water, air and other unfavorable conditions which conveniently invite termites. Anti termite specimens are smeared before starting concrete work for the foundation, in all timber touching soil, where pipes and conduits are laid etc. For the post construction, the specimens need to be sprayed on all soil touching the external periphery of the building.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF A TERMITE ATTACK?
Knowing the signs can save your huge investment from these tiny creatures.
- Swarming termites could be found near all light fixtures as they are easily attracted towards light
- After termites enter a new home they shed their wings. You might notice these shed wings among dust near windowsills, heating vents, doors, in sinks and bathtubs and in spider webs.
- Termites build muddy, flattened tubes approximately the width of a drinking straw. These tubes give them protection from predators and temperature extremes and help maintain a moist atmosphere.
- Because termites eat wood from within, you can tap suspect wood with a screwdriver handle and listen for a hollow sound.
- Dark areas or blisters in wood flooring may indicate termites feeding within or below.
Oftentimes there will be no visible indication that the home is infested. Termites are cryptic creatures and infestations can go undetected for years, hidden behind walls, floor coverings, insulation, and other obstructions. Termite feeding and damage can even progress undetected in wood that is exposed because the outer surface is usually left intact.
PRE CONSTRUCTION TREATMENT
Pre constructional anti-termite treatment is a process in which the soil around the building is treated at a very beginning stage of construction, ie, during the construction stages of the substructure up to plinth level. It basically involves treatments in very prime and exposed areas like trenches for columns, plinth beams, plinth filling, at junction of walls and floor, in expansion joints etc. Before that, a thorough site inspection is required to properly assess the quantity and dosage of chemicals.
- Bottom and sides of excavation are treated with chemicals before the foundation is laid
- Wherever slabs on grades are to be built , holes are drilled in the soil ,and filled with chemicals
- The entire perimeter of the building construction structure is treated with chemicals by drilling holes in the earth
- In pipe beddings, the area is filled with chemicals to secure the pipe from any future termite infestation.
Let us have a look at the procedure in detail,
Here the site is thoroughly inspected by our experts, and all sorts of organic matter, dirt and rubbish are cleared up. If any termite mounds, several holes are drilled with bars and are immediately destroyed by treating with our chemicals.
TREATMENT OF EXCAVATED TRENCH
This procedure helps severely in protecting the foundation which is directly in contact with the soil. We treat the bottom surface and sides of excavation for column pits, walls trenches and basements, upto a height of about 300 mm with our chemicals.
TREATMENT OF SOIL ALONG EXTERNAL PERIPHERY
The external perimeter of the building shall be treated here. The entire perimeter of the building shall be rodded to make holes at a depth of about 300 mm. We then pour the chemical emulsion into the hole and tamp back the soil after treatment. This prevents the termites from entering the building from the exterior surroundings.
CONSTRUCTING STRUCTURAL BARRIERS
We provide continuous dense physical structural barriers at plinth level to prevent entry to termites through walls. These barriers may be in the form of concrete layer or metal .Metal sheet is provided under wood work. Its also called a termite shield made up of GI or copper sheet not less than 0.45mm.
SOIL SURROUNDING PIPES AND CONDUITS
Pipes with its tubular structure, is one of the most coziest homes for termites. We treat the service pipes entering the foundation/building .Treatment shall be carried out at a distance of 300 mm away from pipe in both Side at a depth of about 75 mm below the pipe, basically, at each entry points treatment shall be carried out.
TREATMENT OF FLOOR AND WALL JUNCTIONS
Continuity of vertical chemical barrier on inner wall surface from ground level to finished floor level is required. The floor and wall junctions again require special attention. The termite treatment is carried out by, placing a channel of 30×30 mm at all junctions of wall and columns with floor before subgrade is laid. Then, holes are drilled up to ground level and our chemical emulsion are poured, tamped the soil back into the channel and consolidated.
TREATMENT OF EXPANSION JOINTS
Soil beneath the expansion joints at ground level shall be treated with our chemical spray at the quantity, per running meter of expansion joint.
POST CONSTRUCTION TREATMENT
Now this occurs as a maintenance process for those buildings which are already infested by termites. Proper termite inspection is carried out to get to know the spread of termites in the building, and to detect the points of entry of termites in the building. Any shelter tubes detected are immediately dismantled by injecting anti-termite emulsion through them. If the attack is severe, the soil around the building, and soil under the floor may be injected with anti-termite emulsion. This treatment may be applied upto a depth of 30 cm below ground level. To prevent the entry of termites through voids in masonry, 12 mm dia. Holes are drilled at 30 cm c/c at downward angle of 45 from both the sides of walls at plinth level and chemical emulsion is pumped into these under pressure. These holes are then sealed.
They say “prevention is better than cure”. Rather the pre construction methodology is more effective and economical than the post construction treatment.
